The news broke on Wednesday that the New England Patriots would release star cornerback Stephon Gilmore without a trade partner if one did not appear. While the NFL believed that Gilmore would play in Tampa along with Tom Brady, a trade partner was found just hours prior to the time that Gilmore's release was set to be made official. The Carolina Panthers exchanged Gilmore for a sixth-rounder in 2023.

The 2019 NFL Defensive Player of the Year is still recuperating from a quad injury, and is not eligible to be removed from the physically incapable of performing list until Week 7. However, the addition of Gilmore to Carolina's secondary is an excellent one. Gilmore is in the last year of his contract, and was hoping for a higher compensation in the offseason but with a new team that the Panthers will need to consider this question at some point later on.

So, who was the winner of this deal and who was harmed by it? Let's take a look at some aspects of this deal.
